One photo. One memory. One thing to pass on to a kid. Then we’re gone till Thursday.

We’re dedicating the next few issues to the 8-bit joy of neon lights in darkened rooms, the mechanical “clink” of quarters hitting the dish, the ritual of placing those quarters on the marquee, and the ability to lose hours standing up.

The cart drops and I lean with it.

Thuggee carts behind me. A dead end ahead. I yank the stick and the cart jumps tracks. Da-da-da-DAAAH, da-da-da-da-DAAAH!

For one second there's a brim over my eyes.

Then the track runs out.

Homework Assignment

Tell a kid that you couldn’t just leave a message if someone was on the line. A busy signal meant hanging up, grabbing an ice-pop from the freezer in the basement, running back to the phone, and punching in all 7 digits again, just hoping whoever was on the line was finally done.

See ya next Thursday.
